Companies House ID Verification: What You Need to Know

The UK government is introducing new rules to improve transparency and reduce the risk of fraud in company ownership. A key part of these reforms is mandatory identity verification for company directors, people with significant control (PSCs), and anyone who files on behalf of a company.

Why is ID Verification Being Introduced?

Companies House has long been a public register of company information, but until now, it hasn’t actively checked the accuracy of the details provided. This has sometimes allowed fraudulent or inaccurate information to be registered.

The new ID verification process aims to:

  • Strengthen trust in the company register

  • Make it harder for criminals to use UK companies for illicit purposes

  • Provide greater assurance to investors, suppliers, and the public

Who Needs to Verify Their Identity?

The new rules will apply to:

  • Directors of UK companies

  • People with Significant Control (PSCs) – those who ultimately own or control a company

  • Anyone filing information at Companies House on behalf of a company (such as agents or accountants)

How Will Verification Work?

There will be two main options:

  1. Direct verification with Companies House – using a secure online service to upload ID documents and prove your identity.

  2. Verification through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) – such as an accountant or company formation agent, who can complete the process on your behalf.

Once verified, your status will be linked to your profile at Companies House, and you won’t need to repeat the process every time you interact with them.

What Happens If You Don’t Verify?

  • New companies will not be able to be incorporated without verified directors.

  • Existing directors and PSCs must verify their identity within the set deadlines.

  • Failing to verify could result in penalties, criminal offences, or restrictions on acting as a director.

When Will This Start?

Starting November 18, 2025, a Companies House personal code, obtained through GOV.UK One Login or an authorized agent, will be mandatory for all company roles. Failure to verify will prevent new company incorporations and filings, and will be an offence for existing directors and PSCs. When you have successfully verified, you’ll get a unique identifier known as a Companies House personal code. The code is personal to you, not your company or a company you work for.

What Should You Do Now?

  • Stay informed – Companies House will publish updates as the system goes live.

  • Get documents ready – ensure you have valid photo ID (passport, driving licence) for verification.

  • Check your company details – make sure current filings and PSC records are accurate.
